KIM KARDASHIAN: A HEAVY WEIGHT CHAMPION

Not literally of course. Her body is perfection. The focus of this post is about the kind of influence we think we have versus Kim Kardashian’s. I suppose that even Lindsay Lohan has more influence than we do.

We like to believe that influence is being democratized and that any “nobody” has his/her chance to fame and riches. Not so fast. You have to “hustle” much to get to that level. And here comes Kim Kardashian, et al. They’ll just swap you like a mosquito. Why? Because celebrity sells.

Kim Kardashian is the Queen of Reality TV. She has one of the hottest bodies in the business and she is no bimbo; her business sense is flawless too. She does not hide the fact that companies pay her to flaunt specific brands at events or when she is “ambushed” by paparazzis. She tweets something mundane and oops everybody gobbles it. So if you are a company and you have a sizable marketing budget and you want to pimp out your product, I would simply suggest that you contact Jonathan Cheban. He specialises in product placement with Hollywood celebrities. A tweet by Kim Kardashian will propel your product faster than using Radian 6 and Klout to find your niche influencers. Money well spent I would say.

Kim Kardashian is probably not the only celebrtity to do this. At least she has the honesty to admit to it. And Jonathan Cheban is not the only person you can contact to get your product into the hands of celebrities. This is not a new thing. It has been done in the past. It’s still being done. And social media will not stop this practice. Celebrity still sells even in the realm of authenticity and transparency.

ELIMINATE THE IMPOSSIBLE

I am embarassed to admit it but I have been reading a romance novel. Not a Harlequin but something in that vein… *blush*. Well, I needed the mental break. :)

Anyhoo, it was a few hours well spent. And besides, I found in the book, a simple quote by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle — who wrote Sherlock Holmes — that resonates with me…

Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth.

NEO DESIGN FOR INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Who said that IT websites have to be awkward, grey and boring? Take a look at the website of Neolab located in Slovenia.

They use a relatively clean and simple design. The only unusual elements are the adorable whimsical half-animals half-pixels. And contrary to what some old school technologists could fear, they do not take away the professionalism of this company. Au contraire. If I was looking for an IT company, other things being equal, I would definitely have a second look at their services. And isn’t that the first thing that marketing communications is supposed to do: attract and interest prospects? Well done.

YOU ARE AN ARTIST

I very much enjoyed this Commarts interview of Jared Arthur Purrington, a young, insanely talented illustrator. I find his work to be uniquely fresh and vibrant. I love it.

He gives the following advice about careers: “our career [as an illustrator] starts the day you pick up a pencil and make the decision to do it. Learning fundamental and technical skills are important, but don’t wait for school or someone else to tell you you’re an artist.

This advice applies to everything in life. Don’t wait for anyone to tell you who you are, should be or do.

MY OWN PRIVATE MONSTER

Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway.

I have an uninvited guest that I am about to kick out. He is really obnoxious and very intimidating. He basically pops out of nowhere each time I sit down to think and create. First he blows a hundred and one fluttering butterflies in my belly, then nonchalantly pins me to the wall, and now I cannot breathe, think and even move. His name is Monster of Insecurity.

I use to think that it was my “perfectionnism” that made me pry away from the creative process and uncomfortable situations, but really it’s the Monster of Insecurity that is the bad guy! And unfortunately, it will always pop up at the most incovenient times as long as we are alive and kicking. The only thing that we can do is to learn how to live with him and make friends with him. Someone suggested that we should have beer with him. Why not?

In my case, the way I get rid of Monster of Insecurity is to simply confront him. And poof, Monster of Insecurity is gone. Temporarily for sure but I just need a few hours to focus on what I have to do. It’s sometimes messy but very effective. The following video illustrates perfectly what I mean by confronting your fear heads on. I have done it literally and subjectively many times and it works when you decide to take control. I don’t succeed all the time but I strive for it.

I found this video through Alain Theriault / @startupcoach. Thank you.

THE NEW SOCIAL CONDITIONNING

In Pavlov’s experiment on conditionning, the dogs started to salivate for food in response to the lab technician’s bell. Very quickly, they came to associate the bell with the food they were given. Pavlov called this salivation psychic secretions.

What’s the relationship with Pavlov’s experiment with our addiction with social media?

I am starting to think that we are reacting to digital stimuli in a very Pavlovian way. Many people check their Facebook account first thing in the morning. Some update their status right after sex. It even seems that this Hollywood celeberity surgeon was killed in an accident because he was tweeting while driving. Why are we conditionning ourselves to be connected to social networks 24/7? Do we really need all that stimuli in our lives? We all know that the answer is no.

We know the stimuli. We know our reactions. But what motivates us? What are the psychic secretions that drive us towards those digital networks? We hope to obtain something? What is that something? It could well be different for each person. But I think that there is a common thread in our collective obsession with tweeting and friending… And it’s not simply the desire to connect and make friends. It’s much deeper than that. What do you think?

WHEN DESIGN + DATA MAKE BEAUTIFUL BABIES

I am clearly in love with art, design and beautiful things. I shout it on roof tops. :) However it seems that I am also a closet geek and I am coming out now: I love data and numbers too. Thankfully, today, some very creative folks have combined data and design, transforming them into stunning infographics: the art of making something as dry and straight as numbers look good! Beautiful! I particularly like those of the GOOD magazine. Fast company has cool ones too.

BEST RESTAURANT WEBSITES

I am in the process of designing a website for a client who is opening a restaurant in a few weeks. In my preliminary research, I was quite disappointed with the restaurant websites I looked at. They are mediocre at best and some of them are absolutely atrocious. Many of the websites use Flash (hic). And they just seem cluttered and noisy (yes, there is music too).

However, I am sure that there are some cordons bleus hiding on the web. I am on a quest. In the next few days, I will be compiling random restaurant websites of restaurants… My goal is to have a Top 10 by the end of the week. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.
